IMC 2026: Jio Developing Indigenous Satellite Technology Stack, Files Pre-6G Patents
Reliance Jio is developing an indigenous satellite technology stack and has begun filing pre-6G patents, according to Chairman Akash Ambani at India Mobile Congress 2026. The company is also exploring AI-enabled voice and data services as it looks to contribute to India's next-generation telecommunications ambitions.

Reliance Jio is developing an indigenous satellite technology stack and has already filed patents related to pre-6G technologies, as the company looks to strengthen India's capabilities in next-generation telecommunications.
Speaking to ANI on the sidelines of the 10th India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2026 in New Delhi, Akash Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, highlighted the company's work across satellite communications, 6G research and AI-enabled voice and data services. He said Jio is working toward building an indigenous satellite technology stack based in India.
Ambani also highlighted Jio's ambition to contribute to India's goal of becoming a global leader in 6G technology. He referred to the target of having 10% of global 6G patents originate from India and said Jio intends to contribute significantly through research and intellectual property development. The company has already started filing patents in the pre-6G phase, ahead of commercial 6G deployment.
Alongside satellite connectivity and next-generation mobile networks, Jio is exploring how artificial intelligence (AI) can improve conventional telecom services, particularly voice and data. Ambani said AI-driven innovations in these services could deliver additional benefits to Indian consumers, reflecting the company's broader focus on its digital services and consumer value proposition.
For India's RF, microwave and satellite communications ecosystem, Jio's focus is significant because satellite connectivity and future mobile networks depend on advances across wireless communications, RF hardware, network infrastructure and semiconductor technologies. Indigenous technology development and patent creation could strengthen India's participation in the technologies and standards that shape future communication systems.
As India expands its ambitions across satellite communications and 6G, Jio's announcement highlights how major telecom operators are beginning to invest in technologies beyond current-generation networks, with greater emphasis on domestic intellectual property and indigenous technology development.
