Noida's HCLTech and Japan-based semiconductor company Rapidus have announced a partnership aimed at advancing next-generation semiconductor technologies and strengthening engineering collaboration between India and Japan.

As part of the announcement, the companies inaugurated two HCLTech development centres in Bengaluru and Hubballi, Karnataka.

These centers will leverage HCLTech’s global leadership in core engineering to offer Rapidus a range of semiconductor engineering capabilities, including mask design, design infrastructure, process design kit development, design technology co-optimization and layout design.

The partnership also includes plans to develop a pipeline of engineering talent from India to support Rapidus' workforce requirements in Japan.

The announcement was marked by a ceremony at HCLTech's global headquarters in Noida, attended by C Vijayakumar, CEO and Managing Director of HCLTech, and Dr. Atsuyoshi Koike, Representative Director and CEO of Rapidus.

Rapidus is pursuing advanced semiconductor manufacturing capabilities in Japan, making engineering partnerships and access to specialized technical talent important elements of its broader development strategy.

The newly inaugurated centres could support collaboration across semiconductor engineering activities, although the announcement does not specify the exact design, process, verification, or manufacturing functions assigned to each location.

For Karnataka's semiconductor ecosystem, the development adds to the region's existing concentration of engineering organizations, design centres, and technical talent.

The partnership also illustrates how India's semiconductor engineering workforce is becoming increasingly connected to international chip development and manufacturing initiatives.
