Indian space technology company PierSight is pursuing an application-specific approach to satellite development, focusing on systems designed for distinct monitoring requirements across maritime, forest, and land applications.

In a recent industry discussion, Gaurav Seth, CEO and Co-Founder of PierSight, explained why different Earth observation applications require different satellite architectures rather than relying on a single general-purpose platform.

According to Seth, applications such as land subsidence monitoring, flash flood detection, and maritime vessel tracking operate across different timescales, ranging from months to days or even hours.

These differences create unique requirements for satellite systems, particularly in terms of imaging resolution, observation coverage, revisit frequency, antenna dimensions, available power, and orbital characteristics.

For Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) systems, these trade-offs are especially important. Achieving higher spatial resolution, wider imaging coverage, and more frequent observations can place competing demands on radar hardware, spacecraft resources, and mission design.

SAR satellites use microwave signals to observe the Earth's surface, enabling imaging under a wide range of lighting and weather conditions. Their capabilities make them relevant to applications including maritime surveillance, environmental monitoring, disaster assessment, and land deformation analysis.

PierSight's approach involves developing separate systems optimized for maritime, forest, and land monitoring applications, with each architecture designed around the specific information required by its intended users.

For RF and microwave engineers, such specialized satellite systems create opportunities in SAR payload development, RF front-end design, antenna engineering, microwave power amplification, receiver design, and radar signal processing.

The company's strategy reflects a broader engineering principle: satellite performance depends on optimizing the complete system for the mission rather than maximizing every technical parameter independently.
