U.S.-based semiconductor test equipment maker Teradyne has announced plans to acquire a $300 million stake in FormFactor, bringing together two major companies in the semiconductor testing ecosystem.

The companies plan to collaborate on advanced semiconductor test architectures, test infrastructure optimization and production readiness, targeting applications including High-Performance Computing (HPC), High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM), advanced packaging and silicon photonics.

Teradyne is known for its Automated Test Equipment (ATE) used in semiconductor production testing, while FormFactor specializes in semiconductor test and measurement technologies, including wafer-level probing solutions.

For semiconductor validation and test engineers, this collaboration is particularly relevant as advanced chips increasingly rely on heterogeneous integration, chiplets, 2.5D/3D packaging and high-density interconnect technologies, creating new challenges for wafer-level and final production testing.

As India's semiconductor ecosystem expands into ATMP, OSAT, semiconductor validation and advanced packaging, developments in global semiconductor test equipment and wafer probing technologies could become increasingly relevant to domestic chip manufacturing and testing facilities.
