IIT Hyderabad-Incubated WiSig Networks Showcases Indigenous 5G/6G Technologies to Prime Minister Modi at ESTIC 2026
IIT Hyderabad-incubated WiSig Networks showcased indigenous telecom innovations at ESTIC 2026 in New Delhi, including the Koala Tag, rural 5G deployments, and an emerging pre-6G waveform called OTFDM.

WiSig Networks, a telecom technology startup incubated at IIT Hyderabad, showcased indigenous 5G and emerging 6G communication technologies at ESTIC 2026 in New Delhi.
According to an announcement shared by IIT Hyderabad, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the WiSig Networks exhibition stall and was introduced to several technologies developed by the company and its research ecosystem.
The technologies highlighted during the visit included the Koala Tag, rural 5G deployments, and OTFDM, an emerging pre-6G waveform developed through work involving IIT Hyderabad and WiSig Networks.
The demonstrations were presented by Sakshama Ghoslya, Principal Engineer at WiSig Networks and an M.Tech alumnus of IIT Hyderabad.
One of the technologies highlighted was the Koala Tag, described as enabling connectivity through mobile and satellite networks.
Integrating terrestrial and satellite connectivity is an important area of wireless communication research because it can support communication beyond the coverage of conventional cellular networks.
Such approaches are relevant to remote monitoring, asset tracking, industrial connectivity, and applications requiring communication across geographically dispersed locations.
The announcement also highlighted rural 5G deployments, reflecting efforts to extend advanced wireless connectivity into underserved areas.
Rural network deployment introduces engineering challenges involving coverage, infrastructure costs, backhaul connectivity, power availability, and spectrum utilization.
Developing wireless systems suitable for these environments is an important part of expanding communication infrastructure.
Another technology presented was OTFDM, which IIT Hyderabad described as an emerging pre-6G waveform.
Wireless waveform research investigates how information can be transmitted efficiently over radio channels while addressing challenges such as interference, mobility, spectral efficiency, and implementation complexity.
New waveform approaches are among the areas being explored as researchers investigate technologies beyond existing 5G systems.
For RF and wireless engineers, these developments connect several important technical areas, including RF transceiver design, digital signal processing, modulation, antenna systems, and wireless network integration.
The exhibition also highlights the relationship between academic research and startup-led technology development.
IIT Hyderabad's incubation ecosystem has supported WiSig Networks in developing indigenous wireless communication technologies.
The presentation at ESTIC 2026 provides visibility for Indian research and engineering efforts across advanced wireless communications.
However, the announcement did not establish that OTFDM has been adopted as a formal 6G standard or that the demonstrated technologies have received new commercial deployment commitments.
